Saturday 7.11 + Q and A

17:00 - 18:30

cinema 1

Cinema Soleil focuses on Afro perspectives and stories, presenting a carefully curated selection of short films and concerts. The evening offers a stage to films that rarely get the spotlight in the traditional film circuit, but that excel in expressive power, emotion and visual imagination. The programme makes room for voices that move, challenge and connect.

Alongside the screenings, the filmmakers talk with the audience. Themes such as identity, creating within a diaspora context, personal narratives and the power of storytelling are at the heart of this open conversation. The evening invites encounter, dialogue and inspiration.

DEAR SARa

SARA BOUMKWO

In ‘Dear Sara’, Sara Boumkwo looks back on her childhood dream of becoming a princess and turns this personal memory into a powerful exploration of beauty standards and representation. Through a performative intervention in Brussels’ Matongé district, a hub of African beauty culture, she steps forward as her own version of royal grandeur. The video work weaves together themes such as childhood dreams, Western beauty ideals and self-discovery, while examining the outside gaze directed at women of colour. / 9' (2024)
